I'm looking for a side scan picture of a white sturgeon, 6' to 8' just for reference point to begin my side scan endevors. I purchased a 997c and replaced my lowrance, so I have big expectations, winter in Idaho has slowed my side scan trips. Let me know if you can get hold of any? Thanks Ronnie

These units look very impressive. It's to bad the web site is so difficult to work with. I can't get many pages to load on dial up. I also can't find any info about interpreting the picture of the side scan. The unit won't do much good if I can't interpret the picture. I'm not sure that I can afford the time to do it all on my own.

The side imaging is a very impressive, but I have one question. I have a 21 foot center with an outboard. If the transducer is mounted on the right side of the transom, what happens when trying to look at the image on the left side. How much will the outboard interfere with the image or will it block it out completely?

Response to Shannon Cates: There are several great resources available to find people who use Side Imaging on a regular basis. One is your local marine dealer. You can ask them if they have installed side imaging units on anyone’s boat and see what their feedback was. Another great resource is a site on Yahoo Groups. The address is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sideimaging. This site currently has over 5000 members. Most of these currently own side imaging units. They provide great feedback and advice for users of side imaging units and those considering purchases of side imaging units. This group is totally independent of Humminbird and you will get good honest unbiased feedback from this site. In some cases depending on where you are located you will find users that will be willing to take you on their boat to show you side imaging. There are also many sites on the web that have discussion boards where side imaging is discussed.

Response to Dave Briggs: The key to getting good side imaging returns is having a clear path to both sides of the transducer. If the motor is in the line of the side imaging beam it will block it where it is not useful. The exact answer to your question depends on the location of the motor. Ideally you would be able to stand on both sides of the boat and have a clear unobstructed view of the side imaging transducer. If your boat has a jackplate, the jackplate generally locates the motor far enough back that the side imaging beam will get a clear shot to the right and left. In most cases where there is no jackplate you would need to trim up your motor to get a clear image on the opposite side from where the transuducer is located. We also have setups where you can locate two side imaging transducers (one on each side of the motor) to assure a clear unobstructed view and connect them with a Y cable. This isn’t necessary on the vast majority of boat configurations. If you will take some digital snapshots of the transom of the boat, some from the right side, some from the left side and some from directly behind the boat and email them to me mgibson@johnsonoutdoors.com. I would provide recommendations to the exact setup you need.
