  • Plans, organizes, and controls, with minimal direction, the sourcing of materials and services associated with major strategic commodities including, but not limited to Plastic injection molding, LCDs, Glass Bonding, and cables.
  • Implements global supply management strategies to achieve supplier partnerships, supplier base reduction, effective asset management, competitive cost and value propositions, continuous quality, delivery and cycle time performance improvement, and early supplier involvement in Johnson Outdoors’ new product development efforts.

  • Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, economics or engineering and/or 7 to 10 years of equivalent experience. Five or more years as a buyer of complex commodities including International suppliers, plus additional experience in materials functions.
  • APICS and CPM preferred.
  • Previous specific experience as a commodity manager is preferred. 
  • Experienced in Lean Manufacturing operating standards preferred.

    Assumes a key role in the development of new products by qualifying the designs to the required technical specifications of the product.  Participates in the design process, developing qualification test plans, and working with the quality to ensure that new products are ready for production.  This position is based in Alpharetta, Georgia.

    • Develops qualification test procedures/plans and establishes product qualification test specifications for all new products and product design platforms.
    • Tests and evaluates new product designs and substitute components against specifications. Performs prototype testing with engineers to identify early failures or potential qualification design issues.
    • Ensures ongoing testing of new product designs to meet qualification specifications. Conducts competitive testing.
    • Supports quality in new product processes by serving as member and/or resource on development teams.
    • Assists in evaluating new materials, assembly processes and/or techniques.
    • Develops new technical specifications where industry specs are not available, correlating with historical product performance, product returns and real world usage of the products.
    • Investigates industry appropriate standards and specifications.
    • Designs, builds and troubleshoot tests fixtures.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Bachelor’s degree in electrical, electronic or mechanical engineering.
    One to two years related experience; Intern or Co-op design qualification experience which includes establishing, testing and evaluating product qualifications against specifications would be a plus.


    • Knowledge of fundamental, digital and analog circuit design & components would be a plus
    • Familiar with reading and drawing schematics, identifying component and component values.
    • Familiar with electronics and mechanical test equipment.

    Senior Mechanical Design Engineer


    The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will participate in the mechanical design and development required for a Humminbird marine consumer electronics product.  The responsibility level for this position requires being solely responsible and accountable for the design, documentation and qualification of custom mechanical parts and assemblies for a new Humminbird product from project start to manufacturing, with continued support after manufacturing begins.   This includes establishing and meeting project schedule and costing objectives.


    The candidate will possess the following minimum knowledge and technical skill levels necessary to perform at the responsibility level required for this senior level position:
    • Advanced knowledge of mechanical design principals and techniques.
    • Advanced knowledge of plastic injection molded part design.
    • Advanced knowledge of plastics, polymers, metals, etc. 
    • Advanced knowledge of mechanical assembly technologies (welding, adhesives, etc.)
    • Advanced knowledge of Pro-E or other mechanical CAD design tools.
    • Advanced experience with mechanical test equipment.


    The candidate for this position will be expected to carry out the following mechanical design tasks with minimal supervision from more senior mechanical engineers or management:
    • component level part design
    • cable part design
    • simple mechanical assembly design
    • complex mechanical assembly design
    • specify mechanical/electrical interfaces
    • evaluation/selection of mechanical components
    • troubleshoot mechanical design issues during development and after production start
    • perform prototype design experimentation
    • perform mechanical design qualification testing
    • complete and release design documentation
    • research and write patents
    • perform peer level design reviews
    • write test plans for mechanical design qualification
    • oversee tooling vendors, coordination with molder
    • supervise mechanical engineering student interns or co-op students 

    Minimum BSME degree with 5-7 year’s professional experience specifically related to mechanical design, preferably in the area of consumer electronics products. Educational lab and/or co-op experience will also be considered. 

    The candidate must be a strong, motivated contributor in a team environment. He/she must have excellent social and interpersonal skills, be able to take direction and guidance, and work well within the cooperative culture of the Humminbird Engineering group.
